Freshwater Microalgae
Microalgae are unicellular photosynthetic micro-organisms, living in saline or freshwater environments, that convert sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to algal biomass. The first scientific studies on microalgae started at the end of the 19th century, when the microbiologist Beijerinck (1890) succeeded in growing pure cultures of Chlorella vulgaris.
Freshwater RhodophytaThe Rhodophyta, the red algae, constitute a division of organisms that share the following combination of attributes: eukaryotic cells, lack of flagella, floridean starch, phycobiliprotein pigments (red and blue), un-stacked thylakoids, and chloroplasts lacking an external endoplasmic reticulum (Woelkerling, 1990). They are primarily marine in distribution, with only approximately 3% of the over 5000 species occurring in truly freshwater habitats (Sheath, 1984).
